At City Heritage, we believe that culture and nature are not separate stories—they are pages from the same book. Every temple, fort, or marketplace we visit has grown out of the natural landscapes that once sustained it. Our ancestors didn’t just build on land—they built with it, in harmony with the rivers, the coastlines, the forests, and the seasons. As we reflect on this year's World Environment Day, we are inspired to look deeper into how our Heritage walks can serve as a bridge between celebrating the past and protecting the future.
Since our founding in 2018, City Heritage has led more than 650 Storytelling walks across Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, and other vibrant towns of North Kerala. Each of these walks is not just a journey through historical streets, but a gentle reminder of how environmental awareness and cultural identity go hand in hand. These curated experiences highlight how our traditions once prioritized balance with nature—through sustainable trade, eco-conscious architecture, and community-driven practices. From spice trade routes shaped by monsoon winds to ancient water tanks and sacred groves preserved by local communities, the past speaks volumes about living lightly and responsibly on the planet.
As we look around today, we see a world where rapid urbanization and mass tourism often forget this delicate balance. But at City Heritage, we are committed to reviving those lost connections. Our storytelling methods, inspired by local narratives and oral traditions, invite people to observe more, consume less, and reflect on how even a small action—like choosing a guided walking tour over a motorized one—can reduce our environmental footprint.
This year, to mark World Environment Day, we’re engaging with local communities, students, and travelers through a series of special walks and campaigns. These efforts aim to foster a deeper understanding of how heritage tourism can also be a tool for environmental education and action. Through meaningful partnerships with institutions, cultural groups, and youth organizations, we are encouraging a new generation of travelers to see heritage not as something to passively admire, but something to actively protect.
We’re focusing on a few key steps this year:
Ultimately, our goal is simple but essential: to inspire people to walk gently through life—understanding that every step we take today leaves an imprint on tomorrow. By preserving both natural ecosystems and cultural legacies, we can create experiences that are not just beautiful and educational, but also sustainable and socially meaningful.
As this Environment Day reminds us, when we protect the earth, we also preserve the memories, identities, and human values shaped by that earth. Let’s continue to build a future where *heritage and nature grow together*, side by side—not just in books and museums, but in real-time, real places, and real lives.
